FT BOARD DIRECTOR PROGRAMME NEWSLETTER
May 2026 Edition - Written by Lottie O’Conor
It is rare for a week to go by without a headline about the latest AI developments, and how they are changing the way companies function at a fundamental level.
One of the most recent conversations revolves around the direct integration of AI into the boardroom. Tech firm Diligent has developed an “AI Board Member” described as a “digital colleague in the boardroom” with personas including “ a long-term value investor, an activist, and experts on cyber security or geopolitics.” The company’s CEO says that there was initial hesitation, but companies are now more open to the idea.
Whether this a sensible addition to the board lineup or something that could disrupt the status quo forever, remains to be seen. As with any major developments in technology, the big question is, how far will it go? While automating processes and saving valuable time may be a good use of AI technology, to what extent could its integration begin to impact decision-making processes at the highest level?
